NEW ALBUM, The Orphans |
KRISTEENYOUNG have just completed recording their new album, THE
ORPHANS. The title relates to Kristeen's experiences as an adopted
bi-racial child and an "indie" artist adult. The lyrics, composed
with a beatnik's sense of the sound and rhythm of a word, possess
both razor sharp honesty and surreal imagery. Performed and recorded
live, the album is bombastic, visceral and dissonant, with melodic
moments of heart-aching clarity. |
Tony Visconti about the new album from
www.tonyvisconti.com: |
"I spent January and some of February recording the latest Kristeen
Young album at James Iha's Stratosphere Sound Studios, with Mario
McNulty engineering the basic live tracks and Rud Lee Cullers
assisting. The CD was mixed by myself at Studio B, Looking Glass
Studios. Kristeen and drummer Jeff White wanted to sound powerful
and raw, the way they sound live, for this one.
We made a
promotional video of three songs which can be seen on her site
www.kristeenyoung.com and agreed that the next album should
sound that way. As hard as it is to believe, the video performances
are 100% live, no overdubs or miming to track took place. We always
had this great sound under our noses but we used to think we needed
guitars, bass and glam dust sprinkled all over the music. Well, we
didn't do any of that on the new album, tentatively entitled The
Orphans (which also could be the group's new name). Kristeen has
told me that she's very proud of this one. And, you know what? So am
I! We are looking for a release in May." |
More news from the upcoming album
"X" |
"I'm
very excited about this album. The theme is the 10
Commandments, with each song addressing a different
commandment....but with an argument to try to convince you to
break it...ie. why it might be a good idea to lie, or steal.
It might be a dark subject...but hopefully it comes across
with a great deal of fun. Surprisingly, the theme seems to
have become very timely in the United States. The first song
on the album, "No Other God", is a duet with Brian Molko, of
Placebo. I am so pleased this collaboration. I can't wait for
you to hear it. I am a huge fan of Placebo, and of Brian's
voice...and now I'm a huge fan of him. I just adore him. |
'No Other God' recorded in London |
'No Other God' (written by
Kristeen) has been recorded with Brian Molko from Placebo in London
earlier this year. Both Brian and Kristeen are very enthousiastic
about this recording, so let's hope that this will be available
soon. (20.2.2004) |

The Way Out Club, St. Louis 27.12.2003
from BNetter Rebeccab 31.12.2003 |
I was lucky to see kristeen
Saturday night at the Way Out Club in St. Louis. Let me just write,
that she had some odds against her Saturday night. She is sick and
started losing her voice midshow. Now, here's the pretty damn, hell
of an impressive thing-she finished the show and did one encore
song. My friend and I enjoyed the show. Gregstl was there, all of us
enjoyed the show.
How many singers do you know would keep singing, and sing damn
difficult, vocally demanding songs, while literally unable to talk?
Not many.
Her new songs, Cold Steel, Yesterday's Future Man, and I missed the
title of her last song, but wow! |
Message from Kristeen
(24.12.03) |
If you live in the St. Louis
vicinity, or will be visiting there over the holidays...I'll be
playing a show at The Way Out Club (2525 S. Jefferson, St. Louis,
MO) on Saturday, December 27. This is a solo show (but, "solo"
doesn't mean "soft", or "soothing", or "paralyzed"...). I'll be
playing LOTS of new material from my new album.
The album (that I started recording last week) has a central theme
that I'm very excited and pleased about. We will be finished
recording and mixing by the end of January (as we are taking a
holiday break). The "we" I'm referring to is drummer, Jeff White,
and bassist/producer, Tony Visconti. I'll have a couple of other
guest players, too.
Also, in 2004, I'll be playing in the U.S. again. This past year,
besides a small unannounced show in August at Frederick's Music
Lounge in St. Louis, I didn't play in the U.S. I was playing in
Portugal and London all year (Portugal because my album,
"Breasticles" was released there in June, and London because I'm
having a love affair with that city).
All the best to you in 2004,
Kristeen Young |

From
TonyVisconti.com: |
She did a rousing CD lounch concert in Lisbon. An
Electronica Portuguese group called Micro Audio Waves opened for
Kristeen (they impressed Tony that much that he plans to do some
recordings with them). Then Kristeen accompanied herself for the first
half of her set, then two members from Micro Audio Waves joined her for
the second half. The audience of 500 hundred were more than
enthusiastic, they were cheering, whistling and stomping after each
song. Kristeen had to sing three encores. Later in August and in
October, Kristeen will be returning to Portugal for more gigs and a big
annual festival.

Latest information on 'Breasticles' from Kristeen: |
"The
album is going to be released in Europe in May ... It's going to be
released on N Records ... "Touch Tongues" is going to be
released as a single in March ... I think all over Europe, but definitely in
Portugal. ... It's funny, we are in the studio now re-mixing "Saviour".
We re-did some things to it which included David re-singing some of his
parts. We are just making some minor changes to the record before it's
officially released." (Feb. 16th 2003) |
